Alphabet Soup - Studio Brief 1.

I took the feedback from last weeks crit and worked with it. I took my idea of placing Garamond within a font further. I chose the word 'grain' to play with, as i feel it's relevant to my given word 'surface'. Giving me 5 letters, i aimed at creating 2 final versions from each letter. Each letter is placed within a different font.

I created stencils for 10 letters. The 5 Garamond letters and the other 5 letters that Garamond would fit inside. I made these stencils so i could experiment with different processes and materials. I used a variety of paper types and stationary to perform the methods used to create my letter manipulations. I used the positive & negatives of the stencils to create different outputs of the letter form,  i would then manipulate further and photocopy/scan them onto different paper stock. Before creating the stencils, i had to alter the Garamond letter forms to be able to fit inside the fonts I chose.

(Outside fonts)

I played with a variety of mediums. Some of the items i used were; chalk, oil pastel, ink, foil and pencil led sharpenings. I used a cheese grater to gather the fine pieces of chalk, pastel and tin foil, of which was placed onto glued stencils. These are the starting manipulations with the edited Garamond stencils. I then went on to use my printer to photocopier letters on different paper types.

I have created multiple versions of each of the letters and I have yet to choose my final 10 from what i have produced. This will be my next step.
