Alphabet Soup - Final Ten Manipulations.

FINAL TEN

Following last weeks feedback, I continued to explore my concept of placing my chosen font 'Garamond' into different typefaces, being linked to my chosen word, 'surface'.
Garamond appearing to be another font visually on the 'surface'.
I decided to use uppercase header text for my final manipulations as they are easier to fit letters within each other. I explored the word 'GRAIN' for my letter adaptations, as I feel it is relevant to 'surface'.
As the word is 5 letters long, i aimed at created 2 variations of each letter.

I had created many different versions of my letters and stacked them into piles. I experimented with my typeface by scanning, photocopying, inverting and using different types of stock and equipment. I had to narrow them down to 10 final pieces. I asked a couple classmates for their opinions and took them into account when choosing the final ten myself.

Here are the ten 10x10cm manipulations.

Final Crit

Today we had the final crit for Studio Brief 1. I had responded to the initial feedback from the interim crit and produced my letters. However, from todays feedback I realised that I had gone slightly to far with my processes. Amber had commented that the paper stocks i had used were not necessary as it would of looked better presented on white card as it would be more clear and legible. Although she did say that conceptually, my idea was very strong. I had gone a long way with the methods I used for my letters, but as a set of 10 letters I personally don't think they visually fit together well, because of the differentiation within the letters. I am pleased with how they look visually, but they don't communicate the word 'surface' effectively, as this was mentioned from the crit. On the whole I do feel that I have successfully explored the anatomy of type with different manipulation processes and have produced ten 10x10cm individual letter forms relating to my given word, using the given type.
