Introduction to Design Principles. (3 Fonts)

This week we had our introduction to Design Principles with Fred. Talking about the module and what we will be studying and learning throughout the year.

He also set us a task for next tuesday.
We have to choose 3 fonts with distinctly different characteristics and print out the letters;
ABCXYZ, In upper and lowercase.

Then each of the letters need to be printed individually to fit 10 x 10cm squares.
There will be a total of 36 glyphs.

I started looking through my font collection and typed out (ABCXYZ abcxyz) on illustrator to narrow down 3 fonts that were different and which I liked.

I chose two serifs to begin with that were different, so then i could pick a sans serif last, which i knew would have different characteristics because it wouldn't have serifs.

Franklin Gothic Medium is clear, consistent and bold. This font is definitely different to the others because of its category being a sans serif.

I chose Didot because of the line weight within the letters. The stems are the thickest part, whereas the top and bottom are thin. The terminal, tail and brackets get thick too after the thin parts of the letter forms.

American Typewriter Condensed is thin and stands quite tall. The line weight remains the same throughout, however the terminals and tails of the letters have a thick point. The letters also have very small brackets that join to the serifs, whereas Didot has smooth curved brackets.

Next Tuesday we have to bring these fonts to Fred, then we will begin to use them.
