Secret 7 - Digital Witness

St Vincent's digital witness track appealed to me mainly because the record touches on a topic which I think is very relevant in todays society and should be questioned more. The way technology has taken over society and people have become obsessed. I often get frustrated with mobile devices in that people have to go out there way throughout the day to just record themselves and others to post it online to remain somewhat relevant with todays generation. People representing themselves as someone there not or changing the way they approach people in order to get their attention is also something I find stupid. Theres a lot of weird things happening nowadays due to technology and the internet. I was drawn into make a design for this song because of it's topic.

Whilst discussing about secret 7 to another classmate they said that digital witness followed along from the theme of charlie brookers television programme 'black mirror', that examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Also an article on the song mentions black mirror too.

In my head I had the idea of drawing a mobile or technological device of some sort, with eyes around it look at it. I'm not sure why this came to mind, but I could visualise my style of drawing from the faces I do being used to create the design for this track. Illustration was the route I wanted to take with this design, as my overall approach to secret 7 was to be a hands on one.

I began drawing lots of different eyes on paper. I added the lines around them for them to look surprised or have character to them when placed onto the design.

The drawings were put into illustrator and vectorised.
When putting the design together I was playing around with filling the eye lids, pupils and mobile phone with black to see which was most effective.

Final Design.
The over representation of my design puts forward a mobile device in the centre of eye all gazing at it. The eyes on the phone are tired/sad. The idea is that the person or face in the phone is trapped and a part of the technology. The eyes around the design are the audience and everyone online who uses the technology without thinking twice. They are the people who are eating everything up and following the trends and tweeting relentlessly.

I have a physical copy of the secret 7 pack from Jumbo Records. I'm going to screen print this design. Currently thinking of doing some foiling for this project, as I have never done it before and would like to get to grips with it.
