OUGD406 - Studio Brief 4 - Speaking From Experience - CITY SLICKER TITLE

For the booklet I had planned on using hand painted / drawn typography for the title and headers. I have only stuck to drawing out the title of the zine in an analog manner, as I realised I wanted the headers/titles within the booklet to be a sans serif and be set out more minimally. 

I had thought of the phrase 'city slicker' whilst walking to college one morning, I wasn't sure at first whether or not to use it. I was also considering just using 'speaking from experience', but I had sticking to the set titles and names, it's not very thoughtful. 

CITY SLICKER

City slicker is an idiomatic expression for someone accustomed to a city or urban lifestyle and unsuited to life in the country. The term was typically used as a term of derision by rural Americans who regarded them with amusement. It may refer to a “fop”, or it may be a derogatory term for a person wearing inappropriate city-type business attire, particularly with a brusque or condescending attitude in areas where local residents are offended by an arrogant attitude combined with disdain and lack of respect for rural people and lifestyles. The term can be used to describe people who are perceived as dishonest, arrogant, or simply naive.

The overall relation to the word city slicker isn't exactly a positive association, but in my mind I think it fits the idea of new students coming to a city there not familiar with. Then they start university and gain a better understanding and feeling for their new city. They will become a city slicker. I also just like the term/phrase, I think it sounds cool and will make it more appealing than using something more obvious like, "A Guide To Your Student Life At Leeds" or something crap like that. 

I used acrylic inks to paint the zine title as I wanted a personal feel to the title typography. I also just really like creating my own hand made type, it's rewarding for me. It gets me excited. 

after i had painted the letters, I then waited for them to dry and then scanned them in. Whilst they were being scanned I would move the paper and try and create something more interesting with the letters. I wanted to make the letters longer and wobble a little bit. For the record, I'm not that keen on all that 'on trend' scanning stuff that goes on, I just thought that it would add a nice touch to the painted typography. 

I turned the scanned text into a png and inverted the colours so it became white with an interesting blue tinted edge. I then spaced out text on photoshop and rearranged the letters so they appeared more readable. As there was some difficulty before, some people mentioned that they couldn't read 'SLICKER'. Since then they agreed it looks more legible/readable.
