OUGD406 - Studio Brief 3 - Digital Designs / Colour Variations

As 'A Good Day To Die Hard' is basically about the relationship between Bruce Willis and his son 'Jack'. I decided to use their Silhouettes from a still and place it into a digital layout. I hadn't placed the hand rendered chalk text I created previously into a composition and I thought that these silhouettes could be used alongside the type I created. An A4 piece of black card had been grazed with a white chalk and then scanned in. I used the same process I did with the chalk typeface and then masked into the texture to the character silhouettes in Photoshop.

Here are many different colour variations I tested and experimented with.
I started firstly with the black background, white silhouettes and white text. This was done because of how the chalk actually looks on the card, it's white on black. I then added in a vibrant, eye catching orange for one element of the layout and tried it on each of the different elements.

I did the same colour process on the elements with other colours too.
I tried using the Russian colours; Blue, Red & White. However it really doesn't look too great and it doesn't even really resemble Russia in anyway, it's not very direct. Red was also used to correlate with the film being based in Russia also, but red also ties in with a lot of Action movies and the theme of fighting and blood. However at the time I just thought that black and white looked good on the Red, especially when I added a white border.

After discussing with my friends and classmates for opinions on which colours worked best. I narrowed down the colour variations. The majority thought that the black background and white foreground worked the best as it directly represented the chalk effect through the text and figures. I was also drawn to the variation with the use of red and black as I felt that It had an impact. I also placed a white border around some of the variations with red as I felt that it changed the layout effectively, making it more striking. However I did eventually decide to choose the white on black design as my final poster design. I am pleased with this decision as I think the hand made text and textured objects look effective.

Here is another design I created using the chalk typeface. I wanted to use some of the stills and images from the film itself and use the half tone as I'm not familiar with it.
Yellow and red colours are used because of the relevance to war within Russia. Not that the film is directly linked to war, but it's an action film and the colours are now almost synonymous with Russia
slightly. Although I like the use of colours, I don't think that this design has much of an impact. I also don't like the use of images straight from the film either, but I do like how the half tone looks on top of another colour.
