DR. ME - Music & Design Collective - JARG people

When our group started the Dr. Me brief we didn't already have a name to call ourselves. This was one of the first things we wanted to get out of the way with this project, because we needed the name and logo done before we sent our package to Dr. Me because we were going to send it off under our collective name. The reason we formed our own group was because we all had similar interests within music and graphic design. We want to be able to put all of that knowledge and passion under one roof, which could then proceed into hosting events and exhibitions that would enable us to showcase live music and design work. Our main future ambitions as a design and music group are to have a number of different events under our belt. Hopefully throughout this year we will start to make progress with this, because we all believe that it could be a successful way of gaining momentum and popularity.

We had come together for several meetings over a couple weeks and we had not thought of a group name as we were finding it very difficult to pick and choose one that would work. We didn't want to pick something just for this project, because then if we had put a lot of effort into making something good and then changing our name it wouldn't look consistent in the long run. Everything was at a stand still until someone from the group suggested that we incorporate northern slang into the name. This idea of including something about our surrounding area or geographical location into our name was a big point that most members of the group thought was important, because it created more of a focus for the group. At a recent meeting we began looking at websites that showcased various different northern slang terms, we each assessed them and combined them into different names. Someone eventually suggested the name 'Jarg People', and at the beginning I really didn't like the idea of this. It sounded like an alien planet or something and it reminded me of Plastic People, which was a night club in London. However, everyone else in the group was happy on settling for the name 'Jarg People', which includes the Liverpudlian slang word 'Jarg', which means fake. We all liked the idea of playing on the word fake and using it as our own subtle comment on society.
