When discussing the welcome pack, we talked about how the envelope would be presented. The idea of incorporating a pattern on the inside which is found on most envelopes. The approach with the welcome pack was for it to be designed in a simple manner, just using the hand rendered type and logo. The pattern was made by having the hand rendered airbnb logo copied and pasted in rows where there would be a right side up logo, then an upside down one next to each other, this follows throughout the rows.
I used a template on illustrator for the envelopes and when it came to print the design I kept the marks so it could be cut out with scissors.
The blue colours used for the hand type and logo are both taken from the branding guidelines and colour scheme that airbnb use. I used the "belong anywhere" slogan for the campaign on the inside flap of the envelope. This adds a more welcoming vibe to the welcome pack as new visitors/guests will be new their destination. It adds to the theme of making customers feel at home when away.
After cutting out, I folded the flaps using a bone folder first to make distinct folds.
After talking to Alec about the layout of the design, we thought it would look better in the middle and I downscaled the cover design and centred it. I initially did this but thought it would look better offset to the right, however when printed it didn't look quite right. The 'Belong Anywhere' was also moved further down on the flap because there wasn't enough white space above, as that is usually where the peel of sticky bit is.
I've been impressed with how my printer managed with the quality. It looks and feels like a real postcard and the inside print definitely adds a realistic quality to the design.
