OUGD504 - Module Evaluation

Module evaluation

The first brief was extremely helpful for reflecting upon my practice, it definitely reinforced the way I work and allowed me to figure out other elements I can use to improve myself. I feel that the design I created communicates my process well. Including the things that occur whilst I work, such as wasting time on the Internet, represented the leaflet in a more personal way. The experimentation, the effort of doing trial and error within the development of the leaflet is connected in how I work on other projects a lot too, which reinforced this project about my individual process. The hand rendered typography used also made the leaflet more personal too. You have to unravel the face drawing on the cover and then get to the leaflet, which makes it more interactive. This made the final outcome more effective in my opinion as I have taken into account the way others would interact with the leaflet.

After completing the logo starter brief it had refreshed my logo designing process. The things that need to be considered when doing work for other became more apparent and helped me push towards the goal of reaching a successful outcome. The re-design of the logo I produced has been successful. It presents a professional look that appeals not just to the target audience of film users but would also attract a wider audience too because of the simple, clean aesthetic. I'm pleased with the decisions I made and believe that the chosen logo is the most effective out of all the ones I developed.

With web there were a lot of new areas to consider when designing such as; font families, web safe colour, screen dimensions and different button styles. As the web design topic was one I wasn't too familiar with beforehand, the brief has taught me a lot of new relevant information, which the study tasks helped reinforce. We only had one lesson on coding for this project, but I wish I took more time out to look into it, as it was something I was planning on doing. As I didn't have the time to code my website I put the effort in to create high quality gifs to show how my website worked, which I’m pleased with how they turned out.

Augmented design informed myself on a lot of new and interesting technology that is accessible in graphic design. My knowledge on graphic design has been improved, including areas such as commercial print, which the workshops informed us on. Keeping up to date with latest technology can improve the methods you incorporate in work so much. More innovative design work can be produced from learning modern methods, which can create a bigger impact and attract a larger audience. The brief made me realise how important it is to keep track of on going work out there that I can begin to learn about, which can improve my skill set as a designer. I was disappointed in the experimentation I carried out within the project. I feel I could of done more but the deadline soon approached and I had to meet the requirements. However I still feel that my designs meet their purposes and work well in line with the website ethos.

This module has improved the way I think about my decisions and development process. Considering the different variables and outcomes is something that I’ve recognised the importance of. Making elements cater towards what’s needed and allow them to communicate properly is a procedure I have adapted further towards. This module really points out how important it is to reach the requirements of a project. Clients need the work to meet their needs and be able to talk to their audience correctly. What I wanted to do more of within this module was trying new techniques or creating final pieces of work. I have aimed at making the most of college resources for a while now and I have yet to do so. Experimentation is still an area in which I need to delve further into for the next module. My routine of working has definitely been re-adjusted although I still need to try other approaches in my work. I felt at times that the module went on for a long time and my organization began to wear thin, although this is mainly an adjustment to the structure of the second year, which pushes us to become more independent. For the next module I’m going to let the problems I have encountered and new information I have gained from OUGD504 to help me execute stronger, more thought out work.
