OUGD406 - Studio Brief 3 - Screenprinting

I was initially going to print onto black card as the background of my design is black. However I decided not to print onto black card because with white stock there is a wider range to choose from. I also wanted to have the option for some whitespace outside of the design If I screen printed onto larger sized paper.

I ran into a few problems whilst screen printing. Because I decided to print onto white paper I had to make alter the positives to enable e to print a whole background of black Ink. The Amount of black ink I used was crazy. I had almost used up two full pots. This caused problems with flooding the screen. There wasn't an even amount of ink on the screen at the bottom or top. So when flooding it sometimes didn't flood the whole screen which caused problems with the ink underneath the screen. I had to use a lot of newspaper at one point to dry out the ink and mesh. I also think I used too much ink to begin with as it was filling up to much of the details when screen printing.

The Positives that I used to expose my screen.

I had another issue with alignment when screen printing my second colour.
All I was doing printing was the names of the actors in fluorescent orange. I had chosen this colour because I felt that It would pop out in contrast with the black background.
Each time I screen printed the names I had to align the type from the underlaying tracing paper below the screen to the white space of the actor names in the 1st colour pieces of paper I had already done. I'm not entirely sure why I had to do this, but I think it's because I had cut down my stock from A2 to A3, which may have made the pages slightly different sizes. This is definitely something I'm going to have to bear in mind next time whilst screen printing. It was stressful to keep aligning the type in place, especially when there are people behind waiting to use the presses.

I used a Somerset Satin White 300gsm Stock as well as plain white A3 card.
The outcome on the satin white stock is much better than the white card. The texture appears to sink in better on the satin white.
Some of the designs had gained fades and textures from the screen printing process, of which looked good and gave it a screen print feel. I prefer the extra added textures to the designs, which is why I decided to choose one as my final design for the final crit.
